According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: “In our Catholic tradition, health care is a basic human right. Access to health care should not depend on where a person works, how much a family earns, or where a person lives. Instead, every person, created in the image and likeness of God, has a right to life and to those things necessary to sustain life, including affordable, quality health care. This teaching is rooted in the biblical call to heal the sick and to serve “the least of these,” our concern for human life and dignity, and the principle of the common good. Unfortunately, tens of millions of Americans do not have health insurance. According to the Catholic bishops of the United States, the current health care system is in need of fundamental reform.”

  1. A right is fundamental when it has a quality of the absolute, like truth, justice, freedom, and love. Health care does not share the quality of these. It is a human system and, as such is flawed. That the USCCB considers it a basic right will lead it to manipulation by politicians and far-left ideologues that have close to atheist or agnostic beliefs. How easily these elements can elevate the right to health care above the truly basic right to life.

  2. I think we shouldn’t need to discuss what people need. It’s obvious to functioning human beings. This is why people started support groups. I think we shouldn’t have government involved in health care issues.

  3. So long as the bill does not make me pay for abortion, then I can support it.
